pond design issue?
I'm thinking about adding a pond for my garden. I like the way http://www.maccourt.com/lowes/ponds/lp7918.html because where I would say it has something of a Y-shaped I want to keep some goldfish in it, but I think that 100 gallons is great for fish and plants. I thought about using just a soft covering, but I worry that getting a hole and fish with no water. Is it possible to use a prefab in the background and only sinks almost twice as deep, then using an inner lining so that if broken, would still hold the prefabricated pond fish and some water? Has anyone tried this? Or just worrying too much? I would like some 200-300 gallons total for the pond, and a small waterfall at one end. Any suggestions on filters, UV pumps as far as what brands to buy or stay away from?
Last year, constructed a 800-liter pond with a waterfall. This is what I discovered before / during / after this project: 1. Preformed Line waterfront: Liner, less thick and expensive, punctures easily. Preformed not give much flexibility in size and depth, but no puncture. 2. I buried a sheep stock tank. Hard, impenetrable, permanent. They only come in one size (circular), but last forever. 3. Fish need at least 18 "deep. You have to create a small ecosystem in your pond.'s Easy! 1. Fish. Fish feed on algae and put CO2 in the water. 2. Plants. Shade plants fish and put oxygen in the water. 3. Aerator. Waterfall, spray, dummy. It puts oxygen in water, water flows to combat algae. 4. Bacteria. Available in liquid, powder, or in the form of balls. Balances and clean water. Algae fighting. 5. Sun and shadow. Same amount of each. Plants love Sun Algae hates shade. Fish need shade. Selecting a pump: 1. A waterfall pump is different from a spray / pump bubbling. There are many different websites to tell you how to select a waterfall pump. Your best bet is to go to a pond shop, tell them the size of your pond (feet wide feet deep, held gallons) and the size of the waterfall you want (how high, as wide). Let me help you. 2. A spray / bubbler / fountain pump: A good guide is that you want to distribute the amount of water in the pond per hour (ie 100 gallons = 100 gph pond pump). A pump with an adjustable flow rate is best. 3. Consider a biofilter. Your pump will have a prefilter (a foam lining), but a biofilter is basically a big box with a filter medium (I Use the foam blocks) within it. My biofilter is buried right in my waterfall. 4. I have not had any experience with UV light. Building a waterfall! 1. Sea patient. I spent 6 months researching before they dug my pond. Read what others have done and what mistakes they have made. Save photos. Go to a place of material gardening and select your cascade of flat stones, in addition to his mound small rocks around the waterfall and pond. 2. Be patient! Water does not flow to the way you want. You will have many many settings. 3. Be patient! Even after they built the waterfall, the water does not continue to flow as you wish. What to do? Waterfall foam. It fills in the cracks so that water goes where you want! 4. Be patient! A month after I built my falls, a section liner exploded over the waterfall, the water flowed on the mound and everything collapsed waterfall in the pond. I had to start again. 5. You will be using a shield pond for its waterfall. The thicker, the better. I'm still slowly cut the excess line, it is best to let the excess coating to cut too. Landscaping around the pond / waterfall is fun! I use rocks, ornamental grasses, and the iris to make the look of the pond as if nature put it there. Wow! There is much more that I could share with you, but I will not overwhelm you. Owning a pool is sometimes hard work but fun!
